Early lead seals Diggers Rest's fate

28 Aug 2017 by DRFNC Blog

Diggers Rest’s season has come to a familiar end in the Riddell District Netball League.

Facing Lancefield in an elimination final in tough conditions which included rain, wind hail and, earlier in the day, snow, the Burras were left to rue a poor start at Romsey Park.

The Tigers jumped out of the blocks and led by seven goals and it proved to be a match-winning lead.

The margin was still seven goals at half-time, before the Burras made some small inroads in the third quarter, reducing the margin to five goals.

The Tigers steadied though in the last, winning 38-32.

Burras’ playing coach Amy Carroll shot 23 goals at 80 per cent accuracy. Alicija Marko-Rawlings shot 13 goals.

It’s a third straight year the Burras have been knocked out of the finals in the first week.

It was better news for the B-grade side, which now plays Rupertswood for a spot in the grand final.

On Sunday, the Burras defeated Macedon 29-19 in an elimination final.

In C-grade, the Burras lost to Rupertswood in the qualifying final 31-24. The Burras get a second chance this weekend.
